Das wohl erste Ölbild von Alexander Camaro entstand 1922 während der Zeit als Student an der Akademie für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe zu Breslau, wo er Schüler von Otto Mueller, Alexander Kanoldt und Johannes Molzahn war.
Noch im Charakter der Neuen Sachlichkeit verhaftet, inszenierte sich Camaro mit fixierend prüfenden Blick. In dem Selbstbildnis steht Gerti hinter ihm. Beide sind im Halbprofil dargestellt.
Eine Anmerkung Camaros auf der Rückseite eines Fotoabzugs von „Selbstbildnis mit Gerti“ lautet: “mein erstes Ölbild in Breslau auf der Akademie bei Otto Müller war auf grosser Ausstellung mit ausgestellt. Gerti und ich! 1922“.
Gerti Koper und ihre Schwester standen Camaro zu jener Zeit Model.
Dieses und weitere, zahlreiche Frühwerke Camaros sind durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg verloren gegangen. In dem Werkverzeichnis von Anna Krüger wurde das Frühwerk, welches durch eine frühe Registratur mit Unterstützung von Paul Reißert handschriftlich erfasst wurde, in das Verzeichnis des malerischen Werkes von Camaro erstmals aufgenommen.

Probably the first oil painting by Alexander Camaro was created in 1922, during his studies at the academy of Arts and Crafts in Wroclaw under Otto Mueller, Alexander Kanoldt and Johannes Molzahn.
In the character of the New Objectivity, Camaro stages himself with a gaze of scrutiny. Behind him stands Gerti, both are shown in half-profile.
A note on the back of a black-white-photography from „Self-portrait with Gerti“ is given: „my first oil painting in Wroclaw at the Academy under Otto Mueller was shown on a big exhibition. Gerti and me! 1922“.
In this time Gerti Koper and her sister were models for Camaros paintings.
This and many other early works by Camaro were lost during the Second World War. In the catalogue raisonné of paintings by Camaro, written by Anna Krüger, the early work, which was kept in an early handwritten registration by Paul Reißert, is included for the first time.
