Der in Cotonou/Bénin ansässige Verein „Nu Dagbe“ ermöglicht obdachlosen Kindern und Jugendlichen eine künstlerische Ausbildung im Bereich Zirkus. Der Name bedeutet im westafrikanischen Fon „Eine gute Sache“und ist zugleich das Motto der Schule. Ziel ist es, durch das Erlernen künstlerischer Ausdrucksformen die Emanzipation der Jugendlichen zu fördern: sie in ihren individuellen Talenten und Fähigkeiten zu bestärken und ihnen so die Integration in die weitere Gesellschaft sowie berufliche Perspektiven zu ermöglichen.

Aktuell beherbergt die Schule acht Jugendliche und bietet für weitere zwölf Jugendliche regelmäßiges Zirkustraining. Zum Unterricht zählen Akrobatik, Jonglage, moderner und traditioneller Tanz, Gesang, Rhythmus- und Musikunterricht sowie Französisch, Anatomie und Körperkunde. Die pädagogische Betreuung schafft ein familiäres Umfeld, in dem alle gemeinsam leben, arbeiten und lernen.

Es entstehen Zirkusshows, die eine starke soziale und künstlerische Sog-Kraft entwickeln. 2019 gewann „Nu Dagbe“ für die erste Tournee 2020 die EU-Projektförderung „Culture At Work Africa”. Anknüpfend an die eigenen Geschichten der Kinder, hat die Schule gerade die Arbeit an der ersten abendfüllende Show beendet, die ab dem 27. Februar 2020 an verschiedenen Orten in Bénin gezeigt wurde. Corona bedingt mussten die weiteren Tournee-Termine für März und April 2020 vorerst abgesagt werden.

Initiiert wurde „Nu Dagbe“ 2011 vom nigerianischen Zirkuskünstler und Musiker Segun Olabisi, gemeinsam mit Paula Anke (Vorstand und künstlerische Leitung der Camaro Stiftung). Segun Olabisi, der als Kind selbst viele Jahre auf der Straße lebte, konnte sich 2007 mit seiner eigenen Zirkuskompagnie „West African Circus“ in Bénin etablieren. Gemeinsam mit seinen Kollegen und mit Unterstützung und Zusammenarbeit mit der Alexander und Renata Camaro Stiftung, schuf Olabisi ein umfängliches Unterrichtskonzept für Straßenkinder in Cotonou, aus dem die heutige Schule entstand.

Alexander Camaro verließ selbst als 16-Jähriger sein Zuhause und schloss sich einem Wanderzirkus an, wo er als Clown und Hochseilartist arbeitete. Die Camaro Stiftung hat sich die Förderung der interdisziplinären Künste zur Aufgabe gemacht: Der sinnstiftenden Arbeit des Vereins „Nu Dagbe“ steht sie in künstlerischen und organisatorischen Belangen unterstützend zur Seite.

L’école de Cirque « Nu Dagbe »

L’association « Nu Dagbe », basée à Cotonou/Bénin, offre aux enfants et aux jeunes qui vivent dans la rue une formation artistique dans le domaine du cirque. Le nom de l’association signifie „une bonne chose“ en fon et est également la devise de l’école. L’objectif est de promouvoir l’émancipation des jeunes par l’apprentissage de différentes formes d’expression artistique afin de de renforcer leurs talents et leurs capacités individuelles. « Nu Dagbe » cherche à accompagner les jeunes dans leur intégration dans la société au sens large, en identifiant avec eux des perspectives professionnelles et en les appuyant dans leur insertion professionnelle.

L’école accueille actuellement huit jeunes et propose une formation régulière au cirque pour douze autres. Les cours comprennent l’acrobatie, la jonglerie, la danse contemporaine et traditionnelle, le chant, le rythme et la musique, ainsi que des cours de français, d’anatomie et d’éducation physique. L’encadrement pédagogique crée un environnement familial dans lequel tous vivent, travaillent et apprennent ensemble.

Les spectacles de cirque qui sont créés dans cet environnement, détiennent un fort pouvoir d’attraction sociale et artistique. En 2019 « Nu Dagbe » a été retenu pour le financement d’une tournée de l’Union européenne dans le cadre du dispositif « Culture at Work Africa ». L’école vient de terminer un spectacle complet dont histoire est basée sur le vécu des jeunes. Ce spectacle sera présenté à partir du 27 février 2020 dans différents lieux du Bénin. En raison de Corona les dates de tournée en avril et mai 2020 ont été annulées.

«Nu Dagbe » 2011 a été initié par l’artiste de cirque et musicien nigérian Segun Olabisi, avec Paula Anke (Direction artistique et Conseil d’administration de la Fondation). Segun Olabisi, qui a lui-même vécu dans la rue pendant de nombreuses années lorsqu’il était enfant, a fondé sa compagnie de cirque “

« West African Circus » au Bénin en 2007. Avec ses collègues et avec le soutien et la collaboration de la Fondation Alexander et Renata Camaro, Olabisi a créé un concept d’enseignement artistique pour les jeunes des rues de Cotonou, à partir duquel l’école actuelle a été développée.

Alexander Camaro a lui-même quitté sa famille à l’âge de 16 ans et a rejoint un cirque itinérant où il a travaillé comme clown et funambule. La Fondation Camaro s’est donné pour mission de promouvoir les arts interdisciplinaires : elle soutient le travail de l’association « Nu Dagbe » sur les volets artistique et oragnisationnel.

Circus School „Nu Dagbe“

The association „Nu Dagbe“, based in Cotonou/Bénin, offers homeless children and young people artistic training in the field of circus. The name means „a good thing“ in the West African Fon language and is also the motto of the school. The aim is to promote the emancipation of the young people by learning artistic forms of expression: to strengthen them in their individual talents and abilities and thus to enable them to integrate into society as well as to have career prospects.

The school currently accommodates eight young people and offers regular circus training for another twelve. Lessons include acrobatics, juggling, modern and traditional dance, singing, rhythm and music lessons, as well as French… The pedagogical supervision creates a family environment in which all live, work and learn together.

Circus shows are created, which develop a strong social and artistic power. Nu Dagbe’s national circus tour project was selected for funding by the European Union and Culture at Work Africa in 2019. Based on the children’s own stories, the school has just finished work on the the full-length show that will tour various places in Bénin from 27th February 2020. Due to the Corona virus the tour dates for April and May 2020 had to be canceled.

„Nu Dagbe“ was initiated in 2011 by the Nigerian circus artist and musician Segun Olabisi, together with Paula Anke (Board member and artistic director of the Camaro Foundation). Segun Olabisi, who lived on the streets for many years as a child, founded his own circus company „West African Circus“ in Bénin, in 2007. Together with his colleagues and with the support and cooperation of the Alexander and Renata Camaro Foundation, Segun created a educational concept for street children in Cotonou, from which today’s school was born.

Alexander Camaro himself left home at the age of 16 and joined a travelling circus where he worked as a clown and tightrope walker. The Camaro Foundation aims at promoting interdisciplinary arts: it supports the meaningful work of the association „Nu Dagbe“ and focuses on the artistic and organisational aspects.
